Algorithms for VLSI Physical Design Automation

This lecture provides students with detailed knowledge in algorithms for VLSI physical design automation as well as in the software-implementation of these algorithms. For this purpose, methods and algorithms for the individual design steps (from netlist to finished layout) of an electronic system will be introduced. The software implementation of these methods and algorithms are considered to be the principles of the modern electronic design systems.

The exercises focus on placement, routing and compaction algorithms as well as their software implementation.

Organization of the course (2/1/0)

  1. Definition of Electronic Design Automation (EDA)

  2. Introduction: Geometric principles, design methods and steps, ... .

  3. Partitioning and placement algorithms

  4. Routing algorithms

  5. Compacting and verification methods

  6. Features of electronic design automation of hybrid electronic systems and FPGAs

  7. Commercial CAD-tools
